Salvaging Doors From The Basement

Two weeks ago we dug into our door salvage stack to find a door for the orange bedroom closet, along with some other soon-to-be-used doors. The future closet door is in pretty good shape, although one side has the normal layers of paint, one side has what appears to be just two layers over the stained & sealed wood.

That second coat is just flaking off in some areas… But the other areas needed to be sanded.

The tan is where the paint’s flakey. I filled the holes from the old hardware with putty:

Here’s the old hardware- a cute little thumb turn latch:

The door is actually a bit tall for the opening so we’ll have to take a few inches off the bottom before we can hang it.
Any advice on flakey paint? Will primer seal it up?

We'd love to hear from you!
