Back from vacation, backsplash tiling on the north wall was on the agenda for the evening:

Because a few people were wondering… I actually do participate in the fun/drudgery, besides taking pics. Here is proof- me sponging down our new tiles:

I also scraped extra thin-set from between the tiles with a screwdriver:

And brushing excess bits off with an ikea dustpan brush:

These methods do “work” but if anyone has any advice on the matter please let us know!
