Ok back to the floor issues in our kitchen crawl space*. See where the light is? There’s supposed to be a joist there (running left to right). The one that was there was actually rotted out and not doing much, so it had to come out. (water damaged from that long term leak noone knew about)

Back to being a mason, adding some bricks to the crawlspace* to hold up the new joist:

*The top of the dirt/ construction debris from X years ago is less than 2 ft below the kitchen floor, in a ~8’x3′ area behind the basement stairs. In the basement you just see brick/stone parged walls that look similar to the other exterior walls.
